Fictional Fridays #20

This is not the original story I had planned. I had written a draft with a complete story titled ‘Resilience’, but the page refreshed and I lost the original. I had hoped that the draft would be saved somewhere, but no such luck. I am disappointed and quite angry, but what good will that do? I couldn’t recreate the story and do justice to the original, so I decided to write a new one. I apologise for the length, but there’s only so much you can write when you’re frustrated.

Legacy

Richard was a wealthy man, some would say. Still others would call him a fine gentleman but not mean it. A few would whisper that he was conceited, but no one heard them.

In his living room, he had built a shrine. Perhaps that was the root of those whispers, for it was a shrine to Richard. It was shaped like a giant jigsaw puzzle. The pieces would, ultimately, fit together to reveal his silhouette. Each piece was a mix of black and white, but on closer examination, the black was actually words packed closer together. The words were all adjectives, or, more accurately, compliments he had received in his life. He loved to look at the installation as he sipped his morning coffee, or so his assistant had told anyone who would listen.

One fateful evening, Richard did not wake up from his power nap. Tears were shed. Handkerchiefs were brought out. Arrangements were made. A memorial was held. Words were uttered. Some more tears spilled out. A coffin was lowered. Flowers were brought.

Richard had never married and was childless. His property was taken apart and his things were auctioned off – all but one. The jigsaw puzzle was the last on the list. The ones who had talked about his wealth were absent. All those who had previously flattered him averted their eyes uncomfortably. The few who had whispered about him shook their heads in disapproval.

A part of Richard that could not be killed watched on as the piece went unsold. For the first time, he saw through the people he had surrounded himself with, and not just literally. He tried to grip the wall for support as realisation crashed into him before remembering he was insubstantial. As he felt himself being pushed upwards by an invisible force, he knew that he had left behind nothing; again, not just literally.

I hope you enjoyed that little tale. Since it isn’t what you’d call positive, I would recommend a beautiful piece of music I’m unable to get out of my head to lift your spirits. It is called ‘Who You Really Are’ from the soundtrack of Sherlock Series 4 (Track #11), composed by Michael Price and David Arnold. On that musical note, happy weekend! 🙂

[Edit: My blog just got 180 followers and this little milestone caused a seismic shift in my mood. A warm welcome to my new followers and thank you for deeming my blog worth following.]

  1. I love your fictional fridays and this one was awesome! I loved every word of it and I liked how you thought up the idea of words or compliments squished together forming a black colour.
And OOH! The soundstrack from BBC Sherlock was awesome. Have you heard the rumours of the secret 4th epsiode?

    • Thank you. Your appreciation means a lot. 🙂
Yes, I can’t stop listening to it! I saw somewhere that they consider Abominable Bride also part of Series 4, which brings it to four. But if there is a fourth episode, I would probably scream out loud. No, definitely.

      • I don’t know. I don’t think it aired on TV in India. But I could be wrong. It’s almost midnight here and sleep just went right out the window. 😂
I’m envisioning a scene where normal TV is interrupted by Moriarty’s ‘Miss Me’ on BBC and the fourth episode plays. That would be beyond cool!

      • It did here. OH YES! But Moriarty is dead 😦 I’m so sad. He was the GREATEST of ALL villians and Andreww Scott played him impossibly well. and then…. He committed suicide. His entrance from the helicopter in the last episode was AWESOME! Though I wasn’t too fond of the last episode!

      • I agree with you on Andrew Scott. The way he says “I know what you’re going to say is going to be… AWEsome,” with that expression. Can’t get enough of his acting!
I found it good. Not the best, obviously, but after extensive rationalising and several re-watches, it’s grown on me. The ending was perfect though. 🙂
Incidentally, are you Team Molly or Team Irene? 😂 I’ve shipped Molly and Sherlock seriously since the third series and I’m rooting for them, but they don’t really show much in the end.

      • YAS! He really is an awesome actor. It was good of course. Sherlock is always good! But I just felt Sherlock GOT TOO emotional. He was un-like himslef. I get they wanted to develop him as acharcter but it seemed to un realsitic, for me anwyays. And as the last episode (or maybe not) it was disappointing that nothing really happened. The beginning and ending were awesome though. AND VICTOR(redbeard)!! *Cries*.
I’m definitely NOT team Irene because.. Just no. Sherlock and Molly are… They are awesome but the way Molly and sherlock had to say ‘I love you’ was a bit annoying. She was in such a bad state and I felt that was the wrong time for it to happen. But I don’t think it will grow, to be honest. But it is kinda awesome if Sherlock and Molly did.

      • He was faced with a lot of information that was deeply personal and devastating, which is why he reacted the way he did. I think I can forgive that. The episode was just so dark and so much happened that I was reeling by the end of it. I should binge-watch it to pick up on all the foreshadowing.
I also think that wasn’t the best time for the Molly conversation and I’d have left it out if it were up to me. Felt like a bit of fanservice. Eurus’s genius was almost too much to believe (although on closer look, she has this real weird way of nodding in between sentences which seems like some kind of positive affirmation that might affect the mind – I should Google it).
I’m not sure any relationship with Sherlock would last, except the friendship with John. After that disaster with Janine, I don’t think he should be doing that to anyone else. But it’s really unclear what really happened. I need at least one more series of Sherlock – back to solving crimes, perhaps on a grander scale. Remember, the Borgias Pearl is still missing! 😛

      • No, I’m not a JohnLock shipper either. I really want it to be a friendship. The only other friendship like that which I’m aware of is between Harry and Ron, but this is like the grown-up version and it’s just so heart-warming what they’d do for each other! 🙂
I can’t believe there was a warning before the second episode and not in this one. I think the third was darkest. I mean, drowned little kid is just very, very sad to even think about. I wouldn’t have minded it if it had been just a dog.

      • Yes. When I saw the ‘Not suitable for some viewers’ I was dying yet this one there was no warning? Sherlock isn’t usually so ghastly. I mean victor was awesome! A dog wouldn’t have been so bad, but still gruesome! Eurus was very… I don’t know how to describe her.

      • She was disturbing and inhuman. Brilliant, but at the cost of her sanity. Locked up and alone, abandoned by her family. No wonder she turned out the way she did. I think Sherlock sees her as an opportunity to be what John is to him – humanizing the other in whatever way one can. Picking up on some of the subtler themes after re-watching does give the episode more value. It has its weaknesses, but overall it’s definitely good.
I think this series was bound to be dark. Sherlock did shoot someone in the third one and they had to take it up a notch from there – which they did. And after those trailers, I did expect something along these lines.
