Summary
(adapted from Goodreads)
After attacking Devil’s Reef in 1928, the U.S. Government rounded up the people of Innsmouth and took them to the desert, far from their ocean, their Deep One ancestors, and their sleeping god Cthulhu. Only Aphra and Caleb Marsh survived the camps, and they emerged without a past or a future. The government that stole Aphra’s life now needs her help. She must return to the ruins of her home, gather scraps of her stolen history, and assemble a new family to face the darkness of human nature.
Thoughts
Note: 1. I received a free e-copy of the book via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
2. I have not read any of H. P. Lovecraft’s works and I am reviewing this work on its own merit.
I enjoyed the cast of characters in this one. It’s diverse and interesting, also featuring creatures from different magical races. My favourite was Audrey – young, curious and intelligent, she guided the group out of many difficult situations. The plot was slow and I wasn’t a fan. The style was very different from what I’ve been reading recently and this was also why I was initially uninterested in the book. I believe I would have liked this book a lot better if I was familiar with Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. However, it is quite a nice read for those like me, but not a great one. Unsure of whether I’ll continue with the series as of now.

Recommendations
I would recommend the book to fans of H. P. Lovecraft and those who don’t mind a story with a slow plot. Any sort of eerie and mysterious music would be the perfect accompaniment to this. I don’t generally listen to horror-related music, so I have no specific recommendations on this. Since Aphra is a Deep One, and there’s plenty of salt and sea references, I’d recommend anything salty or some seafood to go along with this.

I’m pushing myself to read more historical fiction this summer, so I’ll definitely add this book to my TBR list!

Hi! I’m glad you decided to put it on your TBR after my review. 🙂
I’m kinda new as well. I started in January this year and was initally on Tumblr, but I just shifted to WordPress because it is much better. Also, I have another blog on WordPress and that I’ve been maintaining since 2 years. So I’d say I’m new to book blogging specifically, just like you.
Thank you for your compliment! 🙂 I’m always on the lookout for new blogs to follow and more books to put on my TBR (let’s be honest, who isn’t?). Of course I’ll check out your blog when I can and you’ll have gained a new follower soon. 🙂 I will try to give you feedback to the best of my abilities as well.
There’s a great community of book bloggers here and I follow quite a number of them. I hope you find yourself some good company on your blogging journey! 🙂 Commenting on other book blogs will definitely help you build your audience. I personally loved the way you commented. It just made me instantly want to connect with you. 🙂 I hope you have a great day ahead as well!

Ah, sorry. This is my 2 year old blog and I just started a new book blog, Unputdownable Books, on WordPress, which I imported from Tumblr (started the Tumblr one in January). I have this post on both the blogs, so I got confused as to which of the blogs you were commenting on. (Turns red with shame) I hope this clarification made sense.
That said, I’m changing a few things here and need a new series for my Friday posts. I decided that for June, I’ll dedicate all Fridays to talk about the basics of blogging. Do stick around for that and I hope you find it helpful! 🙂
